Review: 

Overtime by Toni Aleo is the seventh book in the Assassins hockey series. All of the books in the series can be read as a stand alone. Overtime is actually the continuation of the “Wanting To Forget (Jordie’s Tale)” novella. In the novella, Jordie Thomas is trying to forget Kacey King, the woman who loved him, but he pushed away. Even though he loves her, he didn’t feel that he was good enough for her due to his addiction and other issues with his family growing up.

I will admit that after reading the novella, I wasn’t too happy with Jordie. But since I am a big fan of the series, I wanted to read Overtime to see how his story would develop. I was not disappointed. This story is real to life, with raw emotions that many people can relate to.

Jordie is finally made to face the fact that he needs to do something to treat his alcoholism. He goes to rehab and decides to work very hard to make himself a better person. He also wants to make himself a better man that he feels is worthy of Kacey’s love.

When he returns to Nashville, he wants to work on repairing his relationship with Kacey. Being so upset from what happened, Kacey is not sure that she can put the past behind her and give Jordie a chance. She still loves him, but is very cautious about being hurt again. Jordie does all he can to prove to her that he is changed and is the man who will be there for her.

I love how in this story you feel the emotions that the characters are going through. You can relate to the issues that hurt them and laugh when things happen that are really funny.  It’s also great to see the other characters from past books interact with these main characters. The scenes when they are talking about posts on Facebook are really funny.

Like the other books I have read in the series, I loved this book and I am looking forward to reading the next story.

Jordie Thomas knew he was screwed.

There were two things that he didn’t want, ever, in his life.

Herpes, and to be called into Elli Adler’s office.

Everyone knew that it wasn’t good to be called into the office of the owner of the professional hockey team he played for, the Nashville Assassins. If it was something good, usually she just called to chitchat, as she called it, and dote on her players. But when she called them into her office, ten out of ten times, they were screwed.

And today, Jordie must be screwed.

As his good leg bounced from the nerves, Jordie waited for the door to open to Elli’s office. His shoulders were taut, his other knee ached, and his heart was pounding. Ever since he got the call that she wanted him to fly from Colorado to Nashville for a meeting, he had been replaying every single scenario in his head. He hadn’t been making the greatest decisions lately, and he was pretty damn sure this had to do with his spur-of-the-moment vacation to Louisiana.

He should have just stayed home.

That whole trip was a clusterfuck. That’s the only way he could describe it. He hadn’t acted like himself, he kept trying to forget a certain someone, and he really should have just stayed home and healed. Not only had it pushed him back a week in PT but now he was worried that something he did there may be back to haunt him. As he replayed the weekend, which consisted of a lot of alcohol, a lot of women, and a good long visit in the ER that resulted in even more great sex, he couldn’t find anything out of the ordinary that could have brought him here. Then again, Elli didn’t like when her players’ whore-like tendencies hung out, but still, she usually called and warned them to clean it up.

Hell, he had gotten that call plenty of times. Maybe that’s why he was here? She was done with his ways? Damn it. Hopefully, that wasn’t it though. He was on the road to recovery after a really nasty hit into the boards last year, and nothing was going to keep him off the ice.

Well, except Elli Adler, that is.

Charlie stood at the kitchen window looking toward the bunkhouse. The men had gone there right after dinner, Joe following Rafe and Jerrick after they invited him to play cards. Joe had taken to the two newcomers and they'd fallen into an easygoing rapport of sorts. Both Rafe Preston and Jerrick Black were very handsome men. It still astounded her to find so many good-looking men in one town. It was as if the beauty of the area attracted them. The local McKade men where a striking bunch, all of them with the same devilish green eyes and tall muscular build.

Her thoughts returned to the new ranch hands. They were as different in looks as night and day. Jerrick was blond with light eyes that caught attention. He had a playful edge to him, as if always holding back from teasing. 

Rafe was the more serious of the two, seeming to measure his words before speaking. With black hair and the darkest brown eyes, he made one take notice. Taller than Jerrick, he shrunk a room when entering. Of the two, she took more notice of Rafe. Whenever his dark eyes met hers, it was as if he could see deep inside. To the most intimate areas, she'd rather keep to herself.

"There's too much work to be done for daydreaming," Mary Ellen, Charlie's friend chided her with a soft smile on her lips. "You thinking about our new ranch hands? They are a handsome duo, aren't they?" "Honestly, I barely noticed," Charlie lied and avoided looking at her friend who carried a cup of tea to the kitchen table. The cool breeze blew in through the open windows helping air out the overheated kitchen. She glanced once again outside. The sun's setting always gave a beautiful glow to the valley.

Review:

In 1860’s Montana, Charlotte “Charlie” Kennedy has been doing her best to run the Horseshoe ranch by herself since her husband Daniel’s passing. She has some help from her foreman Joe and her sister-in-law Mary Ellen, but it is a tough job. In addition, there is also fellow rancher Jessup Winfrow who keeps harassing her about selling the ranch to him and marrying him.

Rafe Preston and his best friend Jerrick Black each want to own land and have a ranch of their own. They leave Wyoming and travel to Montana in search of a better place to live. They travel to Colter Valley and feel that is a good place to call home. After being told that the Horseshoe is looking for ranch hands, they go there to inquire about work.

There is attraction between Rafe and Charlie, as well as Jerrick and Mary Ellen. Mary Ellen is called back to Billings to help her family after her sister has trouble with her childbirth. Jerrick wishes that she would stay, but understands and says that he will wait for her to come back.

Rafe and Charlie fall in love and he asks her to marry him. Two days after their marriage, Winfrow’s men attack and kidnap Rafe.  Winfrow tells Charlie that she has to come with him or he will kill Rafe.

Rafe escapes and goes back to the ranch, but Charlie isn’t there. The men go after Winfrow to rescue Charlie. While in jail, Winfrow is charged with murder for previous crimes he has committed and then is hanged.

Charlie sends a letter to Mary Elllen to let her know that she and Rafe are married. Jerrick buys a ranch and Charlie helps him plan a gathering to meet his neighbors. While talking with a friend about how she has been feeling at the gathering, Charlie realizes that she is pregnant.

I really liked this story. I was so interested in what was happening that I couldn’t put it down and read it in one day. The relationship that develops between Rafe and Charlie is beautiful. It is like they are soulmates.

I am looking forward to reading the next story in the series when it comes out!

Wicked Fall is the first book in the new Wicked Horse series by Sawyer Bennett. I am a big fan of Ms. Bennet’s books. I love her Cold Fury hockey series as well as her Legal Affairs series. This new book is just as great as the others that I have read by her.

Woolf Jennings is the CEO of JennCo., his family’s cattle and oil business. Running the family business is not what he desires to do with his life. With his best friend Bridger, Woolf opens The Wicked Horse. It’s a bar that also has an exclusive club where fantasies come to life.

Callie Hayes has just come back to Wyoming after catching her fiancé in a compromising position with another woman. She decides she wants to change her image no longer wanting to be the “sweet and innocent” Callie.

Needing a job, Callie starts working as Woolf’s secretary. Since they start spending time more together, the attraction they have for each other grows and they start a relationship. Which has it’s up and downs.

I really liked the way the relationship between Woolf and Callie develops.  At first he thinks he shouldn’t be with her because of his past, but realizes that she is what he wants and needs. Callie also becomes a more self-confident woman as the story progresses.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!!

“Hey there. It’s Eric, right?”

He stalled and pivoted. Behind him was the one person he didn’t need to see right now. Melissa had talked about her enough that he knew all he needed to about her. And some shit he hadn’t cared to.

“Ms. Wilson. Hope you’re enjoying our little town here.”

She leaned against the wall of Abe’s Diner. “Little? This place is huge. I did enjoy some shopping this morning. The market a couple blocks over has some of the nicest things. I spent way more than I should.”

He bet she did. From what she’d shown at the bar yesterday, she had more money than she really knew what to do with. In his opinion, she’d earned it all by letting it all hang out in fashion magazines for the world to see. Wearing skimpy outfits and bathing suits, which to him was too much to be taken seriously. She had the looks for sure, but he questioned her morals.

“Well, I have to get back to the bar. Nice seeing you.”

“Oh, you couldn’t spare a few minutes to have coffee with me? There are a few things I’d love to talk to you about.” She sidled closer to him, a smile lighting her face, her eyes twinkling like stars in the evening sky.

He bet she was used to getting her way all the time.

She brushed a hand over his bicep. “Just a quick coffee, and maybe a bite to eat?”

The heat from her palm rushed through him. His fingers tingled and the urge to feel her warmth around him caught him off guard. He took a step back and shook his head. Damn her for getting to him. He needed to steer clear. She would do anything to take his sister away from here, even use her wiles to do it; he’d seen her flirting with Drew yesterday.

“Sorry, I don’t have time to entertain you. You’ll have to find someone else to keep you occupied, Ms. Wilson. Have a good day.”

Eric turned and strode away. He needed to keep a watchful eye on his sister and find a way to dig himself out of the hole he was in.

Neither would be easy, though.

Not with the distraction of Candy Wilson around to battle with.

I just read His Touch, Book 1 in the Summer in New York series by Patty Blount and it was such a great book!

I had read the Christmas in New York series and loved the stories. A Match Made at Christmas is book 4 in the series. That is the story where Kara’s sister, Elena Larsen is the main character. Kara is a secondary character in A Match Made at Christmas, but I hoped that she might have a story of her own so we could see more of her. Kara gave birth to her daughter Nadia at the end of A Match Made at Christmas and says that her name Nadia means hope.

In His Touch, Nadia is eighteen months old and Kara is a struggling single mother. She is trying to juggle her work schedule with caring for her growing daughter. Kara and Elena lost their mother at the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. They both believe in signs from deceased loved ones. Elena had been getting signs from their mother, but Kara hadn’t as much. She is waiting for signs from their Mom that she is a good mother to Nadia, especially since she doesn’t feel like one at the moment.

Reid Bennett is a NYC paramedic. Kara meets him at the child CPR class he is giving and there is immediate attraction. There are a few times after they meet that Kara and Reid are in the same place, including the store where Nadia gets out of her stroller and Reid finds her. Since he is having a bad day, he is nasty to Kara. Not meaning to he says things that makes Kara think that her mom is sending her signs that she is a bad mother.  Kara says that her mom keeps sending her Reid (Mr. Judgmental).

Reid has his own issues to deal with. He lost his brother Kyle on 9/11, his daughter Erin died when she was 3 and he got divorced. He He isn’t ready to get into a serious relationship, especially with a woman who has a child. When he is upset he goes to the 9/11 memorial and talks to his brother. He even hears Kyle say that Reid should help Kara and give a relationship a try with her. He thinks that Kara might be a sign to him from Erin.

When Nadia’s father tells them about a possible health problem, Reid gets scared and backs away from Kara. He decides to face the fears that have been haunting him and tries to repair the broken relationship he has with Kara.  

There was so much emotion in this story. There were the post 9/11 feelings of loss the characters faced, how Kara felt about her mom and being a mom, as well as Reid’s apprehensiveness about being with Kara. I loved how they helped each other heal.

One of my favorite parts, and I have a few, is the part where Reid has a vision of a woman holding his daughter on her lap and reading to her. He realizes that even though he never met her, that it’s Kara’s mom. I also loved how the characters from the Christmas in New York stories were involved in this story.

I highly recommend reading this story, as well as the previous Christmas in New York stories if you haven’t already.
